Poverty and the devastating effect of HIV/AIDS are the major challenges faced by the people of Uganda today. Decades of tribal conflicts has further increased poverty in Uganda especially in the north eastern part of the country.

Although Uganda has one of the fastest growing economies in Africa since 2000, the country is relatively poor and ranked 157 out of 182 countries in United Nations Development Program’s (UNDP) 2009 Human Development Index. UNDP estimates that 51.1 percent of Ugandans live on less than $1.25 a day. The recent economic growth has benefited mostly people in urban areas, with majority of the population heavily dependent on agriculture especially in the rural areas.

HIV/AIDS has left a devastated landmark in the country of Uganda. The prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Uganda reached a height of about 30% in the early 1990s and decreased to nearly 6.3% by 2004/2005. However, the gain made in the 1990s is being reversed, with an estimated prevalence rate of 7.3% in 2012 from recent studies.

As a result of the level of poverty and devastation caused by the civil war in the northeastern part of Uganda that left the country in ruins, ACF Missions Inc. chose to operate in the Kumi district, and the Fort Portal area in the western part of the country that has high prevalence of HIV/AIDS.  Frequent droughts witnessed by the northeastern region have also made subsistence agriculture an insecure means of livelihood, and consequently, left many people to suffer from hunger and malnutrition.

At all levels of our programs, reaching people with the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ and Spiritual Counseling are the most critical.  We disciple, educate, and mentor people of all ages individually and in group settings. The core elements of our evangelism and discipleship program include

1. Open air crusades and personal witnessing

We conduct open air crusades during our summer missions’ trip. We organize this outreach during the evenings of the first two days of our summer missions’ trip programs.

2. Counselling during medical outreach

We conduct spiritual counselling during every ACF medical outreach for people who come for medical help. The counselors use the opportunity to introduce the patients to Christ and pray with them. We believe that some medical issues have spiritual root and believe that through prayers and counselling, the sick will receive total deliverance and healing.

3. New converts discipleship class

After our summer missions’ trip, we organize a follow up discipleship class for all the people that gave their lives to Christ through all our programs. The discipleship program is made up of ten (10) bible study series that help to establish the new converts in the Christian faith.

4. Training for pastors and church leaders

In most places we visit during our missions’ trips, the pastors and church leaders with whom we collaborate are not properly trained in biblical doctrines and Christian life styles. As a result, we conduct leadership trainings, which include several aspects of church and financial management.

5. Counselling for children sponsored by ACF

We conduct Day Camps for the children and the young adults in ACF Child Sponsorship Program. The program activities include spiritual counseling that introduces them to the saving knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ, and academic counseling that encourages them to represent Christ in their school activities. We also discuss their personal and social challenges given their backgrounds as orphans.

The health condition of people in Africa calls for an urgent action to improve the health care services in the continent. ACF Uganda together with ACF Missions Inc, have been conducting medical outreaches in remote villages of Africa since 1998 and has served thousands of people during our summer missions’ trips during this period.

Presently, we hold community medical outreaches in remote villages and communities that lack health care services during our summer mission trips in Benin Republic and our two program sites (Fort Portal area and Kumi district) in Uganda. The medical team consists of doctors and nurses from the United States and local medical practitioners.

The second component of our effort to help with the provision of health care in Uganda is the construction and operation of health clinics. ACF Uganda with support from ACF USA completed the construction of a medical clinic in Kigarama, Uganda which started providing services to the people in November 2023. Together we’re constructing a second medical clinic in Kamenya, Kumi district which is projected to cost about $100,000.00. Extra fund will be needed to equip the clinic for full operation.

The Kigarama medical clinic currently has eight staff members and it costs about $2,500.00 every month to pay staff salaries and replenish the stock of drugs and medical supplies to adequately operate the clinic. The clinic currently serves both inpatient and outpatient departments.

The ACF Economic Empowerment Program has two components. The first is the micro finance project that provides loans to individuals to help them establish small businesses. This program is designed to train the needy and underprivileged in Africa on how to sustain themselves economically and help to build their communities.  It also helps to keep the youth away from the street and make them productive members of their communities.  Through this program, ACF Missions Inc. gives hope to the needy children and the community in general.

The second component is agricultural production. The goal of this project is to raise resources internally to sustain ACF Missions Inc. program with less dependence on external support. It is also designed to help provide employment and solve the problem of food scarcity in Africa. The sustainability of our programs in country is vital for the expansion of our program into other countries.

Micro Finance Program

Our program offers interest free loans of $300 to $500 along with training to indigenes to start small businesses in an effort to create employment for the youth, and poor families with young children.

The Uganda economic empowerment program focuses on the children graduating from the Child Sponsorship program. Due to hard economic situations in Africa, many students who graduated from college find it difficult to get jobs. Rather than watch the investments we made in the orphans who pass through our child sponsorship program go through the drains, ACF.

Selection Procedure and guideline:

1. Local leaders (Church leaders) and ACF Uganda local Program Implementation Committee (PIC) identify core small businesses that could produce favorable economic results with potentials of revolving the interest free loan within one to two years to other recipients.

2. Local leaders and PIC identify individuals with business abilities and spiritual integrity as recipients of the loan.

3. Each recipient turns in a one-page summary (Condensed Business Plan) describing (i) the nature of the business they plan to start, (ii) Why they thought they should receive the loan (iii) what they should do to help them repay the loan in one to two years so that it can be extended to others, and (iv) a breakdown of the cost elements of the business.

4. Three (3) months after the loan is issued, recipients shall make periodic (monthly) payments sufficient to pay the loan off in one to two years. The payments shall be made to the leader of the PIC for deposit into a recycling savings account.

5. The PIC monitors the progress of the Economic Empowerment and provides ACF Missions with quarterly reports.

6. The PICS forms an Accountability Team among the recipients to ensure that monthly repayment are consistently made and deposited into the recycling savings account.

7. Record Keeping Requirements: The success of every venture is dependent on good business judgment and sound record keeping. Each recipient of the interest free loan is required to keep records of goods, labor or assets purchased as well as sales made or services provided.

ACF Living Hope project

Living hope program is designed to help vulnerable women in the community attain a skill in order to sustain herself and her children.

Sewing Program is a one year intensive career skills program offered to women experiencing deep poverty. It is one of the programs at the ACF Uganda National Offices.

Students attend a half-day sewing class for instruction, practical application and entrepreneurial training. At the end of the year, women who successfully demonstrate their skills receive a sewing machine and certificate. Through skills that have been attained, we have seen numerous women begin small businesses on their verandahs which have grown to a level of owning garment shops. Sewing machines are provided through generous people like you.

The tailoring training project is already having a huge impact on lives, giving women the means to invest in the future of their families.

Vulnerable women are taught tailoring, alongside basic numeracy and literacy skills, so they are able to go on to work or set up their own business. Our staff ensure every student is supported throughout their training

Keep A Girl in School (Kagis) is aimed at improving Menstrual Health Management among primary and secondary school going adolescent girls and young women. The campaign targets to support all vulnerable girls in school with pads to improve school retention and promote good menstrual hygiene management practices.

Menstruation is an integral and normal part of human life, indeed of human existence. Menstrual hygiene is fundamental to the dignity and wellbeing of women and girls and an important part of the basic hygiene, sanitation and reproductive health services to which every woman and girl has a right (SNV 2015). Women and girls in rural settings and in particular girls in schools suffer most from stigma and lack of services and facilities to help them cope with the physical and psychological pains they undergo during their menstrual periods.

Currently the means of coping for girl pupils is the use of manufactured or self-made sanitary towels using cotton wool, old cloth, dirty napkins and other un-hygienic materials. Studies have shown a lack of sustainable menstrual hygiene management support for the girls, from basics such as suitable facilities to psychological support for girls dealing with menstruation.

These practical gender and strategic gender problems present negative impacts to girls in their personal lives and development opportunities: restrictions on schooling and mobility, increased fears and tensions, early marriage and potential vaginal infections resulting in the worst case in infertility. There is therefore need to improve menstrual hygiene management to keep girls in school giving them the opportunity to study well, make better choices later in life that affect their well-being and livelihoods.

Child Sponsorship Program

The objective of the Child Sponsorship program in Uganda is to provide an opportunity to every beneficiary of the program to reach their full God-given potential with the goal of raising future godly leaders, missionaries and highly motivated professionals to contribute to the development of the country.

HIV/AIDS has left a generation of orphans in Africa, particularly in Uganda, which has over 2 million Orphans. These children have been left to care for themselves and many have been forced to drop out of school.  Without an education, these children, and the generations beyond them, have little hope for a better future.  Orphans are the most ignored victims of the AIDS pandemic in Africa, and many of them have been abandoned in remote villages devoid of government programs. Their deplorable conditions call for urgent attention. Consequently, ACF Uganda has been providing a Christian response through our child sponsorship program. The Child Sponsorship Program provides an opportunity for individuals to invest their prayers and finances in the life of a child, who otherwise, would not have the opportunity for a bright future.

Scope of the Program

The program caters for the most vulnerable children in primary and secondary school, including those who progress to the university in the Kabarole, Kumi and Kampala Districts of Uganda.

In addition, ACF provides

• Seed money for those who are not able to continue to the university or unemployed to start up a business.
• Medical support to the sponsored children.
• Spiritual counseling.

Selection criteria

ACF Missions Inc. uses the following criteria to select the beneficiaries.

• Must be an orphan
• No living relative to care for him/her
• No other source of sponsorship or inheritance
